TRAX GHANA LAUNCHES THE SPRING PROJECT FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Trax Ghana with funding from Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR) UK, is implementing the “Sustainable Project in Northern Ghana (SPRING) Project”.

The overall goal of the project is to increase household income and well-being of Female-Headed Households (FHH) at Pelungu in the Nabdam district of the Upper East region through enterprise development and Agribusiness of Shea and the Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP). The OFSP combines a number of advantages that makes it a choice crop for sustainable food security, improved nutrition and income generation.

The Shea is a major alternative source of income for majority of households and women in particular rely on the Shea for financial independence. However, women face several challenges such as lack of sound business skills, poor quality of products and limited access to competitive markets. The project intends to address these challenges through capacity development training, provision of Shea processing equipment and promotion of market linkages for Shea and OFSP products.

The project area has less tree cover, resulting into severe land degradation and gullies. As part of community engagement, the project will promote tree growing to restore degraded lands to combat desertification, promote sustainable biodiversity conservation and mitigate climate change of local communities. Project beneficiaries, Trax Ghana staff, traditional authorities, community members, Media personnel, representatives of government and non-profit organizations among others participated in the official launch of the project in the Pelungu community.
